Our theme this year is "Narrating the Self: Personal Storytelling in Pedagogical Practice".
For our keynote this year, we are pleased to welcome Crossing Borders. Crossing Borders is a group of newcomer and Canadian-born students who seek to raise awareness about newcomer issues and break down barriers between people. Crossing Borders tours a multi-media performance in which youth share their stories using slides, spoken word, film, drama, documentary, dance and music. They believe in the power of story to create community and promote healing. (https://www.crossingbordersprogram.com)

Volunteer Opportunity: Syrian Refugee Project
The Syrian Refugee Project was started by Jim Estill, CEO of Danby Appliances, to sponsor over 50 Syrian families to resettle in Guelph. Currently within the project, a strong focus is developing to strengthen the ESL learning of the families, as some are advancing quickly, but others are still struggling. They are looking for ESL teachers who may be interested in volunteering with the project.
Currently some of the potential opportunities are:
- Assessing the families for their ESL learning
- Working 1-on-1 with the families in their homes
- Female-focused classes and activities
- Teaching a 2-hour weekly class at Danby
- Developing tools and resources
Please contact Dallas Baker if interested in this volunteer opportunity.
